Family Canoeing Trip Turns Violent

Criminal charges were filed against a young Lawrenceburg man last weekend after a family canoeing trip turned violent.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that members of the family had set out on the canoeing trip from Iron City Park on Sunday. Around 5:00 p.m. deputies were dispatched to intervene in the family squabble.

Reports show that a number of family members were involved in the altercation, including a mother, daughter, son and others. Some witnesses reported that during the argument, the daughter began to strike the son with a canoe paddle, while others named the son as the aggressor. Some claimed that the son had attempted to drown his sister, and that others began to intervene at that point. In addition, witnesses reported the son sprayed his mother with pepper spray.

As a result of the altercation, Dev Dotta Kaushik, 23, of 1055E Old Florence Road was placed under arrest on one count of aggravated domestic assault. He was transported to the Lawrence County Jail without further incident.

Kaushik is slated to answer the charge through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on June 11.
